DASC starts freshman at PS Harrisburg
MIDDLETOWN, PA - Sydney Hemler, a former Boiling Springs High School and Dillsburg United standout is now continuing her education and playing college soccer at Penn State Harrisburg (PSH) University in Middletown.
Sydney is a starting center back on the D-III women’s team at PSH. While playing club soccer for the Dillsburg Area Soccer Club (DASC), Syd trained with Leo Weil, a very successful college coach at Johns Hopkins University.
According to Rudy Grubesky, one of her college coaches and Dillsburg Avalanche coach, “Sydney is a tremendous athlete and an awesome player, but most importantly, she is a terrific young lady. When we were recruiting Syd for PSH, I knew she had received excellent training by Coach Weil and good coaching from her high school coach. It is also a credit to the player development programs that Simon Skudder has implemented at DASC that we have a player of Sydney’s skill level and talent representing our club at the college level.”
In an interview with Coach Grubesky, Sydney said, “Coach Weil was excellent. DASC was focused on the players and it was a very fun environment for me to play in. I also liked the small-town atmosphere at Dillsburg.” She added, “I liked playing at Dillsburg because everyone was very welcoming and coming from a small club, I was able to get the full player development experience and get information about the college recruiting process.”
When asked about the transition from club soccer to the college level, Sydney explained that, “the college coaches at Dillsburg knew the level and pace of play required at the next level, so I knew what to expect based on what my coaches told me. Plus, I knew the training that I was getting would enable me to adapt to the college game quickly.”
Coach Grubesky agreed, “Syd was ready to play on the first day of our preseason camp. She is one of the hardest working and most coachable players on our team. Sydney is a great example of the caliber of players that we are working hard to develop at Dillsburg. She is also a great role model for younger players.”
